The deadline to apply for the free\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/settled-status-eu-citizens-families\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">EU Settlement Scheme<\/a>\u00a0was 30 June 2021, but there are a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/settled-status-eu-citizens-families\/eligibility\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">few cases<\/a>\u00a0in which you can apply after the deadline.<\/p><p><strong>What is income tax?<\/strong><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/income-tax\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Income tax<\/a> is the\u00a0tax you have to pay the government based on your yearly income. Most income is subject to income tax, including income from employment, self-employment, private and state pensions, investments and property rental. Income from certain savings products, and many state benefits, are not subject to income tax.<\/p><p>If you\u2019re self-employed, you\u2019ll pay taxes on any profit you make. This includes income from products and services that you sell online.\u00a0You do not have to pay tax on all types of income.<\/p><p><strong>Who pays income tax?<\/strong><\/p><p>Income tax\u00a0applies to most types of income, including the salary you earn from your job, profit earned from your business, pensions, and even the rent you receive if you\u2019re a landlord. Corporations, estates, and other types of entities are also required to pay tax on their profits.\u00a0<\/p><p>You might not have to pay income tax on all your income, because most people qualify for one or more types of tax-free allowances or tax relief. Most common state benefits you do not have to pay Income Tax on are:<\/p><ul><li>Universal Credit<\/li><li>Child Tax Credit<\/li><li>Housing Benefit<\/li><li>Pension Credit<\/li><li>income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)<\/li><li>Disability Living Allowance (DLA)<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Self-employed<\/strong><\/p><p>If you earn untaxed income as a self-employed individual or from rental properties, it\u2019s important to\u00a0complete and submit a self-assessment\u00a0tax return\u00a0every year before the deadline. If you don\u2019t, you could be subject to penalties.\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>When do I need to submit my tax return?<\/strong><\/p><p>If you need to do a tax return, the\u00a0deadline for submitting it for the UK tax year\u00a02021\/22\u00a0(6th April to 5th April) is midnight on 31st October 2022\u00a0if you\u2019re submitting your return on paper, or 31st January 2023\u00a0if you\u2019re submitting your return online.<\/p><p>The deadline to pay your tax bill for\u00a02021\/22 is on 31st January 2021.<\/p><p><strong>Company taxes and Vat rates in the UK<\/strong><\/p><p>Businesses operating in the UK must pay\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expatica.com\/uk\/finance\/taxes\/corporation-corporate-tax-in-the-uk-439270\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">corporation tax<\/a>\u00a0on any profits accrued. For the year 2022\/23, the normal rate of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/corporation-tax-charge-and-rates-from-1-april-2022-and-small-profits-rate-and-marginal-relief-from-1-april-2023\/corporation-tax-charge-and-rates-from-1-april-2022-and-small-profits-rate-and-marginal-relief-from-1-april-2023\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">corporation tax<\/a>\u00a0is 19%. A lower rate of 10% is applied when the profits can be attributed to the exploitation of patents, while specific corporation taxes apply in certain cases.<\/p><p>In general, companies operating in the UK will also need to charge and pay VAT at 20%, although there are some exceptions.
