What is the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS)?

The Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) is a tax deduction scheme affecting self-employed workers and contractors operating in the construction sector. The scheme aims to reduce tax evasion in the industry and allows subcontractors’ tax liabilities to be collected gradually across the financial year.

Do I have to register with the Construction Industry Scheme?

Both contractors and subcontractors can be affected by CIS, each with different responsibilities. Contractors are required to register for CIS. Subcontractors are not required to register, but if they don’t, deductions may still be applied to their payments at a higher rate.

What is the difference between PAYE and CIS?

CIS does not apply to employees. Payments to employees are taxed through the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system, where tax and National Insurance are deducted at source. CIS applies specifically to payments made to subcontractors in the construction industry.

What counts as work covered by the Construction Industry Scheme?

CIS generally applies to construction work involving permanent or temporary buildings and structures, as well as civil engineering projects such as roads, bridges, and similar infrastructure works.
